The core of our calculator applies a natural logarithmic function derived from the Ideker lab's epigenetic clock research. The formula is:
human_age = 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31
This formula captures the observation that dogs mature very rapidly in their first two years of life (a one-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human) and then age more gradually thereafter. The natural logarithm models this decelerating aging rate far more accurately than a simple linear multiplier.
Because body size is one of the strongest predictors of lifespan in dogs, we apply a size-category multiplier to the base calculation. Larger dogs age more rapidly after reaching maturity, while smaller dogs tend to have slower biological aging rates. Our multipliers are calibrated against breed-specific life expectancy data and adjusted annually as new research becomes available.
